Pet Acupuncture

People are often surprised to hear that animals love acupuncture and that they sit still for it!

Acupuncture is a safe technique which involves the insertion and stimulation of extremely thin needles into specific points on the body. There are over 300 acupuncture points which are situated on interconnected pathways, or channels, which extend from head to tail. Acupuncture points have been found to exhibit enhanced electrical conductivity. Thus, acupuncture is used to bring about a balance in energy, or Qi, throughout the body, and help all parts of the body interact more effectively. Various factors contribute to a lack of circulation in the body, such as diet, stress, trauma, and aging.

Treatment plans for your pet may vary; however, it is often essential to administer treatments weekly for four to eight weeks. The effect of the treatments is cumulative. Not only is acupuncture used to resolve existing disorders and health conditions--it is also capable of preventing future health problems. I often recommend maintenance treatments for my animal (and human!) patients.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs are an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each formula is tailored to the specific needs of the pet following evaluation and diagnosis. A formula is made up of two or more herbs, which may be roots, leaves, bark, flowers, fruits, or seeds. I primarily use herbs in tablets and tinctures from the Kan Essentials product line*, which was founded by a licensed acupuncturist and veterinarian. This type of medicine complements acupuncture well and is usually administered to the pet twice a day.
